Figs are coming into season! They are delicious and versatile.
You might only know figs from those fig newtons you ate as a kid. Or maybe you just eat them straight off the tree.
Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy them:
Fig butter I constantly buy fig butter for my kids’ peanut butter sandwiches. Try it, it’s really good and a nice break from the usual fruits used in PBJ, and with a lot less sugar.
Jam Lovely served with cheese and crackers.
Pressed The Spanish make a fabulous fig and almond “cake” called pan de Higo that is served in thin slices with cheese.
Compote Try it on sandwiches!
Dried SO good with walnuts and goat cheese, or dipped in chocolate.
Fresh drizzle with a balsamic vinegar reduction.
Stuff with nuts, sugar and spices and bake.
Also great paired with other fruits, baked into quick breads or muffins.
BBQed I recently BBQed some figs, then I chopped them up and tossed them with smoked almonds, cinnamon and sea salt, then drizzled a bit of maple syrup on them. So tasty just on its own or served with bread. (I recommend multi-grain sour dough).
So keep your eyes and taste buds open and you’ll discover ways to incorporate this yummy and fleeting fruit into your life.
